During “kitten season” (spring through early fall), it’s very common to find litters of newborn kittens outdoors. While it may seem like they’ve been abandoned, that’s often not the case.
Leave them alone first
If the kittens appear clean, quiet, and tucked together, their mother is likely nearby searching for food. Mother cats will leave their kittens for several hours at a time.

The best thing you can do is leave them where they are and observe from a distance.
Watch and wait
Give the mother time to return—this could take several hours. Keep pets and people away so she feels safe coming back.
When to step in
Intervene only if:
- The kittens are cold, crying constantly, or appear sick/injured
- You are certain the mother has not returned after an extended period (8+ hours depending on age)
- The kittens are in immediate danger (traffic, flooding, predators, etc.)
Why this matters
Newborn kittens have the best chance of survival with their mother. She provides warmth, nutrition, and care that humans cannot easily replicate. Removing them too soon can actually decrease their chances of survival.
If help is needed
- Contact Semopets or a local rescue for guidance
- Be prepared to provide round-the-clock care if the kittens are truly orphaned
- Never assume they’ve been abandoned without observing first
Remember: Not every kitten needs to be rescued—sometimes the best way to help is to let mom do her job.
